Lawyers Call For Action After Latest HMIC Review
Specialist abuse lawyers have urged South Yorkshire Police to work swiftly to address concerns raised in a new HM Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) report, which found that the force’s child protection work still required improvement.
An inspection into the force was first carried out in September last year and a post-inspection review in April 2015 found there was still progress to be made on arrangements with care homes and guidance for police staff.
Other failings included not recognising risks to some children and not working jointly with other agencies. Recording practices also remained poor.
HMIC added however that the situation was not “irretrievable” and outlined several improvements, including in prioritising child protection and in its initial response when attending incidents related to young people at risk.
Following the release of the report, specialist abuse lawyers at Irwin Mitchell urged South Yorkshire Police to work quickly and thoroughly to improve standards and the level of support available for at-risk children.

“The recent issues related to child sexual exploitation in Rotherham have put a major spotlight on the quality of safeguarding services in South Yorkshire and – while steps forward have been taken on the issue – it is clear there is still much to be done.

“It is vital that lessons are learned from the terrible problems seen in the past and that everything possible is done to ensure that any children at risk of harm are able to access the support they need.

“While it is too late to right the wrongs faced by so many young people in the region, it is hugely important for their sake that steps forward are taken to ensure such shocking problems are never seen again.” Tracey Storey - Partner
