Driver Found Guilty Of Causing Death By Dangerous Driving
The father of a teenager who was killed in a car crash in December 2013 has called for people to take responsibility for their actions on the road after the driver responsible was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving and held in custody to be sentenced at a later date.
Lawrence Moorhouse was just 14 when he was hit by a car when crossing Beaumont Road North, Manor on the afternoon of 10 December 2013. He was rushed to the Sheffield Children’s Hospital where he later died from his injuries.
Lawrence’s father Alan Moorhouse instructed specialist serious injury lawyers at Irwin Mitchell to investigate the circumstances of the crash. Together they are now calling for drivers to take more care on the roads particularly around schools after the court heard the driver was travelling at 45mph in a 30mph zone.
The Driver Adrian Webster, from Manor Park Centre pleaded not-guilty to causing death by careless driving at Sheffield Crown Court but a jury found him guilty and he will now be sentenced on 11th September having being kept in custody.
Expert Opinion
“This incident absolutely devastated Lawrence’s family and highlights the extreme consequences of not taking care when driving. A collision can occur in an instant and have a massive impact on many people’s lives.
“It’s crucial that drivers take note of this case and ensure that they are extra vigilant when they are travelling near to schools. All too often we are contacted by families whose lives have been changed forever because of children being hit by drivers who are speeding or not paying attention.” Caroline Mitchell - Associate Solicitor
Alan, age 51, from Manor, Sheffield, said: “Lawrence had all his life and dreams ahead of him. We were devastated by his death and although nothing will ever bring him back and it’s taken a long time to get this far, we are now relieved that justice has now been done.
“I would like to thank the emergency services who tried their best to save Lawrence and also CRUSE bereavement charity for its support during this difficult time.
“I only hope that our situation sends out a message to all drivers of the need to take more care when driving around schools and to take responsibility for their action. We lost our son and our daughters lost their brother that day when with more care and attention the accident could have been avoided completely. We also believe that a 20mph speed limit should be introduced around all schools.”
