European Commission Rapid Alert System for Non-Food Products Issued For Ovens
The European Commission’s Rapid Alert System for Non-Food Products (RAPEX) has issued an alert concerning a number of SMEG oven models.
According to the alert, a screw used to connect particular model numbers to gas supplies may break and cause a gas leak, which poses a risk of explosion.
A voluntary recall of the products has been issued in Italy, where the products are manufactured, but applies to all batch and model numbers subject to the recall that are available in the UK.

Expert Opinion
Manufacturers have a duty to consumers to ensure products released to the market are safe for use and pose no danger to consumers.

“It is very alarming that in this case a faulty screw could lead to the risk of a fire or explosion in homes where one of these gas ovens is fitted. White goods are everyday consumer products and it is vital that they adhere to the highest standards of safety, not only to protect the safety of consumers but also their homes.

“We welcome the decision to recall the products thought to be affected by the issues with the defective screws and we would hope a thorough investigation is underway into the manufacturing process.

“Lessons must be learned from the problems discovered with these products and it is crucial customers are reassured that every measures is being taken to prevent similar issues impacting other household products and that the testing process is of the highest quality.
