A former gynaecologist at Frimley Park Hospital, Surrey, has been referred to a medical tribunal following a number of incidents, two of which have resulted in compensation payouts for patients.

Dr Jayne Cockburn has had conditions placed on her registration by the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service, restricting the scope of her work and obliging her to update the General Medical Council on her employment situation, Get Surrey reports.

The action comes after an investigation by the hospital found that around 50 of her patients had suffered complications after operations.

In August, a 52-year-old woman was awarded £50,000 after a mistakes made during an operation later required emergency surgery. Another patient received an undisclosed sum in October.

A spokesman for the hospital said Dr Cockburn has not performed any clinical duties at Frimley Park since 2011.

"Following the hospital’s own review earlier this year into care and treatment provided by the consultant in question up to 2011, our primary focus has been to support and reassure patients who may have had concerns following treatment and to ensure they receive appropriate ongoing care," he told the news provider.

Expert Opinion
All too often we see the devastating impact mistakes and failings can have on patients. In this case, former patients will undoubtedly be very concerned at hearing that 50 people have suffered with complications after treatment.

“The first priority should be to ensure those affected by the situation are given the best possible help and support. It is also crucial that patients are reassured that action has been taken to prevent further incidents like this in the future.

“There remain questions over how long it has taken for the referral to take place, but it is positive the hospital is taking action to ensure appropriate care is provided to patients.”
