Leading workplace injury and illness lawyers are calling for the Government to ensure health and safety remains a priority for employers to maintain the downward trend in deaths at work, as the country marks Workers’ Memorial Day 2014.

The latest statistics from the Health and Safety Executive show that 148 were killed in 2012/13 while 13,000 lost their lives through work-related illness such as mesothelioma, which is caused by exposure to asbestos and other occupational cancers.

Workers’ Memorial Day is a time to remember those who have died because of their employment and this year events are happening all across the world to raise awareness of the theme for 2014 which is “remember the dead, but fight like hell for the living.”

Statistics reveal that between 2011 and 2012, 1.1 million working people were suffering from a work related illness and another 78,000 people had reported being injured at work, resulting in 27 million working days lost due to workplace injury or illness.
