Construction Firms Invited By HSE To Learn Better Safety
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has invited companies in the construction sector to attend a free event that aims to improve the safety record of the industry. It is backing an event arranged by the Working Well Together campaign, with the half-day seminar taking place in Bucksburn, Aberdeen, on September 17th.
The session will seek to tackle the problems faced by smaller companies in particular, as this part of the sector accounts for 75 per cent of deaths and serious injuries carried out during work. The safety seminar will focus chiefly on the groundworks phase of building projects.
It will also look at some specific topics of concern to the industry and those responsible for health and safety in it, with practical demonstrations on how to make the interface of people and plant equipment less hazardous, the loading and unloading of lorries, working with buried surfaces, the dangers of confined spaces and how to carry out trench work without mishap.
HSE principal inspector Isabelle Martin commented: "Incidents at the groundworks phase - for example trench collapses - can often be fatal, so it is vital that managers and company owners understand how to reduce risks on their sites.
"This free event will provide essential information and advice that could help save lives, so I urge local construction businesses to attend."
Following the event, the HSE will begin a programme of inspections of refurbishment and repair projects across Britain from September 22nd, with this lasting for a month. The site inspections will look at safety standards regarding issues like the potential exposure of workers to dangerous substances such as silica and asbestos.
The exact venue for the event is the Engineering Lecture Theatre of Scotland Rural College's Cruickshanks Building on the Craibstone Estate in Bucksburn. Participants must book their places in advance.
Working Well Together is an industry-led initiative developed with help from the HSE's Construction Industry Advisory Committee.
Other events in the programme include an occupational health awareness day in Chester on September 16th.
