Police have been investigating a number of allegations made by women in the north-west that they were abused when they were in care. The Sunday People reports that allegations of beatings, grooming and sexual offences have been made to officers, with the claims related to care homes in St Helens, Accrington and Preston. A woman, now in her 20s, has claimed that care workers “turned a blind eye” to the abuse she and other girls living at the Briars Hey care home in Rainhill suffered.
The woman also lived in the Dyke Nook care home near Accrington and claims her alleged attackers knew the staff.
She told the newspaper that she believes more than 60 girls may have been abused in the same way during their time at care homes in the region.
News of the investigation into care homes in Lancashire and Merseyside, which began in 2012, comes after similar incidents were uncovered in Rochdale and Rotherham.
