Cosmetic Procedures 'Fine' If Doctors Properly Qualified
There is no reason that cosmetic procedures cannot be perfectly safe as long as they are performed correctly, according to a new report.Researchers from the US have published a study in the medical journal JAMA Dermatology based on the analysis of 20,000 minor, non-surgical cosmetic procedures, including Botox injections and dermal fillers.
It was found that when these were carried out by qualified, competent dermatologists, there were few complications and none at all that were classed as serious.
Last year, a survey conducted by the British Association of Dermatologists found that 58 per cent of the society's members had seen patients experience complications after undergoing non-surgical procedures, with the majority of these relating to people who had received dermal filler injections to plump up their skin.
In addition, 62 per cent of those questioned said these complications had been serious. Examples include skin changing colour, bruising, swelling or the formation of lumps, among others.
However, this new study from the US suggests that with increased education and training on how to best carry out such procedures, this figure could be significantly reduced.
Speaking to BBC News, Dr Dan Poulter explained: "New training standards for non-surgical cosmetic procedures are now being developed to ensure no one is given fillers or Botox by someone who isn't qualified."
Deputy president of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons Nigel Mercer added: "It is only safe if you have the necessary training."
He went on to say that anyone could quote the findings of this study and carry out the procedure, but unless they were properly qualified to do so, they could potentially be putting patients' lives at risk.
The Department of Health is working to regulate the UK's cosmetic surgery industry. Currently, non-surgical procedures account for three-quarters of the total market, which is expected to be worth £3.6 billion overall by 2015.

Expert Opinion
Unfortunately we have seen a number of cases where patients undergoing various cosmetic treatments have been left with both physical and psychological trauma as a result of errors or problems during procedures. However, as this report indicates, it is possible for these procedures to be carried out without complaints.

“We advise any individuals considering surgery to thoroughly research the procedure they want to undergo, as well as the medical professionals that will be responsible for carrying out any operations or non-surgical procedures, to reduce the likelihood of suffering complications as a result of the procedures.” Mandy Luckman - Partner
