Expert Travel Lawyers Secure £20,000 Settlement For Sick Holidaymaker From Thomas Cook
A couple whose holiday was completely ruined as one of them fell seriously ill at a notorious Dominican hotel have spoken of their relief after expert international lawyers secured them justice from tour operator Thomas Cook.Mark Bidwell and Nicola Greathurst, who was 24 weeks pregnant at the time, from Bristol, booked what was supposed to be a luxurious two week holiday at the Bahia Principe Hotel in San Juan, through Thomas Cook, before their new baby arrived.
However, the Bristol couple’s relaxing holiday plans were left in ruins when just five days into their stay in October 2009, Mark began suffering with severe lethargy, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and weight loss.
Specialist travel lawyers at Irwin Mitchell secured a settlement for Nicola in 2013 after proceedings were issued. However Mark’s claim remained ongoing for some time after Nicola’s claim settled. This culminated in an out of court settlement for Mark of £20,000 two and a half weeks before the case was due to go to trial.
Irwin Mitchell has already secured over £5.5 million in settlements from a number of different tour operators for holidaymakers who suffered ruined holidays at this hotel in 2007. The firm has also successfully acted for holidaymakers who fell ill at the hotel in 1997, 1998, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010. The firm also continues to act for clients who fell ill at the hotel in 2012.
Mark, who works as a builder, said: “The holiday was a nightmare for both of us - the food was awful and we have both been put off travelling to the Dominican Republic ever again.Expert Opinion
We are pleased that Mark’s case has been settled and that both of them can now move forward and put their awful experience behind them.
“Sadly, we have had a long history of having to take legal action due to illness at this hotel.
“This was meant to be a relaxing luxurious holiday for the couple before the arrival of their baby, and they had worked hard to save for it but instead Mark fell badly ill and they were unable to enjoy the facilities the resort had to offer.
“Severe gastric illness can lead to long term health problems and it is essential that the appropriate health and safety guidelines are followed to prevent illness to guests at hotels wherever they may be in the world.”

“I regret ever staying at the hotel. It was a terrible experience for us and I am still suffering the consequences today as I am still experiencing ongoing symptoms. I feel as though my life has completely changed and it will never be the same again.
“We are relieved that the legal proceedings are finally over and Nicola and I can move forward from this. It has been hanging over us for so many years now and we are pleased that Irwin Mitchell has secured justice for us.”
