Over 32 Million Procedures Were Carried Out In 2013
The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) has revealed that 32 million cosmetic and non-surgical procedures were performed around the world in 2013.Breast augmentations, liposuction, Blepharoplasty, Rhinoplasty and lipofilling were named as the five most common operations carried out, while Botox injections, fillers and resorbables, laser hair removal, facial rejuvenation and skin treatments were the most common non-surgical procedures.
These procedures were most popular in the United States, where almost four million people went under the knife or needle, with Brazil seeing two million people do the same.
Britain did not appear in the list of the top ten in terms of number of procedures conducted, but a recent study published by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons did reveal cosmetic procedures are becoming more popular.
It revealed 50,122 cosmetic procedures were carried out in the UK in 2013, a rise of 17 per cent on the previous year. Non-surgical procedures were not included in the figures.
If you have been affected by negligent cosmetic surgery you might be entitled to claim compensation. See our Cosmetic Surgery Claims page for more information.
Expert Opinion
The increasing number of procedures taking place in the UK can lead to pressures being placed on surgeons and support staff. It is vital that high standards of care are continued and patients continue to receive the best possible treatment available to them. <br/> <br/>“We advise any individuals considering surgery to thoroughly research the procedure they want to undergo, as well as the medical professionals that will be responsible for carrying out any operations or non-surgical procedures. <br/> <br/>"We have seen numerous cases where patients have undergone various cosmetic treatments and been left with both physical and psychological trauma as a result of mistakes or problems during procedures. It is crucial patients raise any queries or concerns and feel comfortable with their decision to go ahead with the procedure before it commences. <br/> <br/>“It is also important that further steps are taken to increase regulation in this growing industry to ensure high standards are upheld in the sector, but also to guarantee that individuals responsible for safety failings or mistakes are also held to account.” Mandy Luckman - Partner
