A specialist medical negligence lawyer from Irwin Mitchell has renewed calls for a full public inquiry to improve patient safety after appearing on Channel 4’s Dispatches programme about the notorious breast surgeon Ian Paterson.

Louise Hawkley, from Irwin Mitchell’s Medical Law and Patients’ Rights team in Birmingham, was interviewed by Dispatches on last night’s (11 November 2013) episode titled “Can You Trust Your Surgeon?”

The programme explored the work of breast care surgeon Ian Paterson, who worked for the NHS at Solihull Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and privately for Spire Healthcare.  Irwin Mitchell is representing a number of patients who have suffered alleged negligent treatment by Ian Paterson between 1995 and 2010.

The Heart of England NHS Trust announced last year that up to 1,000 women under the care of Ian Paterson may have had a procedure known as a ‘cleavage sparing mastectomy’ which was unregulated. Many women may have undergone totally unnecessary surgery.

Irwin Mitchell continues to receive enquiries and has recently secured a five-figure settlement for a patient who underwent a Cleavage Sparing Mastectomy (CSM) in 2010;  three years after the Trust told Mr Paterson to stop performing the procedures following an investigation into his work in 2007.
