Second Closure Due To Falling Parts
An investigation was launched this weekend after four people were struck by wheels which fell off The Smiler rollercoaster at Alton Towers.
Guide wheels detached from the attraction during a circuit on Saturday (2 November), with those struck by the debris being cared for by park staff and no treatment being required from ambulance staff.
It is the latest incident to hit the 14-loop ride, which opened in May following a closure in July after a piece fell off the track which left a number of people stuck on the ride.
A spokeswoman for the theme park apologised for any disappointment but added that “the health and safety of all of our visitors is our absolute priority”.
Earlier this year, a man suffered a fractured ankle and ten others were checked for injuries after a fairground ride known as The X Scream collapsed at a funfair in St Neots.
Expert Opinion
While it is very welcome that no one was seriously injured in this incident at the weekend, the primary concern is that this is the second time problems related to falling parts have emerged on this ride. <br/> <br/>"The theme park’s views on health and safety are a positive sign and we would urge staff at the resort to ensure all aspects of the ride are thoroughly examined to ensure that the same problems are not seen again in the future. <br/> <br/>"Through our work we have seen cases when people have suffered significant injuries on rides of all kinds and owners or operators have a duty of care to their customer. Parks of this kind remain popular throughout the year and everything must be done to ensure safety is always the top priority."
