Expert Lawyers Secure Settlement Guaranteeing Financial Security For Three-Year-Old’s Upbringing
A three-year-old boy whose father died in a tragic car crash just weeks after his birth has received a five-figure settlement guaranteeing him financial security as he grows up.
Andrew Davies was 24-years-old when he was a passenger in a car which came off a country road and hit a tree in July 2009. He was rushed to North Tyneside General Hospital with severe head injuries before being transferred to Newcastle General Hospital where he died just two days after the crash.
The accident left Toni Jordan, 21, from Whitley Bay, to bring up their son Kallum – who was just four weeks old at the time - on her own. Toni had known Andrew since school and they had been together as a couple for around a year when she became pregnant in September 2008. Sadly their relationship didn’t last but once Kallum was born Andrew committed himself to being a good father.
Expert lawyers at Irwin Mitchell have since arranged for Andrew to be officially recognised as Kallum’s father on his son’s birth certificate and were then able to secure a £66,750 settlement from the defendant driver’s insurers to help provide for Kallum during his childhood.
Helen Thomson, a specialist lawyer at Irwin Mitchell representing Toni and Kallum, said:
Toni added: “Although Kallum had only been born for a short time Andrew was a proving himself to be a great dad. He was really pro-active and even though we weren’t together he would spend every day with Kallum helping me to look after him. It was important to me to have Andrew recognised as Kallum’s dad just as it was important for Kallum that he gets this settlement to safeguard his future.
“I was devastated for Kallum when we found out he had died. I am determined to give Kallum the best upbringing I can and this settlement will help provide for Kallum as Andrew would have done had the crash not happened.
“Since Andrew has not been around to I have had to rely on our families for a lot of help and my mum has been especially supportive so I could continue with my studies. I’m now looking to enrol on the next stage of a Health and Social Care course at college so that I can find work once Kallum is at school.”
