Petition Demanding Law Change Signed By 50,000 People

Legal experts representing victims of child abuse have welcomed calls for new legislation to support the mandatory reporting of concerns regarding such issues, stating that any move to protect youngsters is a vital step forward.

A petition launched by a mother-of-two in Manchester, which demands the new measures to be introduced, has now been signed by around 50,000 people and received the backing of leading children’s charities.

The aim is to ensure adults are legally obliged to report abuse, following the tragic case of Daniel Pelka who died following months of abuse by his mother and her partner. Child protection agencies did not intervene despite concerns raised by both teachers and doctors.

Proposals for the legislation have been backed by Irwin Mitchell’s child abuse lawyers, who specialise in helping victims of such physical and psychological trauma to gain justice over the ordeals they have faced.

Luke Daniels, a Partner and expert in child abuse claims at the national law firm’s Birmingham office, said: “Any measures designed to better protect children from the devastating effects of neglect and abuse can only be welcomed.

“The tragic case of Daniel Pelka has raised serious concerns and the ultimate aim of this change in legislation would be to ensure that those working in schools and similar services are required to report any worries they have regarding the welfare of a youngster.

“Like any form of abuse, the key concern is determining a way to tackle it at the earliest possible opportunity to ensure that the safety of children always comes first.

“With a serious case review continuing into the Pelka case and this petition being delivered to Downing Street, it is likely that this issue will remain in the spotlight for some time.”
