Health Regulator Calls For Improvement To Maternity Services In Dewsbury

Medical law specialists at Irwin Mitchell are urging the Mid Yorkshire Hospital’s NHS Trust to act on calls from a health regulator to improve maternity services at Dewsbury and District Hospital in the interest of patient safety.

On Friday (9 March 2012) the Trust received a warning after an inspection of maternity at the hospital - carried out by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) last month - revealed a series of concerns about lack of one-to-one care, low staffing levels, high levels of staff sickness and the behaviour of some consultants.

The investigation was carried out by the CQC as a follow up on previous visits to the Trust to see if care had improved. 

Rachelle Mahapatra, an expert in the Medical Law team at Irwin Mitchell’s Leeds office, said: “Urgent action must be taken to improve the standard of maternity care offered to patients at Dewsbury and District Hospital.

“It is totally unacceptable that despite previous investigations, it appears care there is still falling short which could put patients at risk.”

She adds: “Irwin Mitchell has repeatedly called for improvements in safety standards and will continue to campaign for the victims we represent until patients get the level of care they are entitled to.”
