Irwin Mitchell Secures Rehabilitation Payout for Motorcyclist Following Serious Crash

Biker Hoping To Get Back In The Saddle After Three Years

A keen biker who suffered multiple fractures in his arms and legs in a serious accident has spoken of his relief that he can get his life back on track after receiving a settlement to help pay for his rehabilitation and specialist adaptations to his home.

Paul Parkin, of Lundwood in Barnsley, suffered life-changing injuries when he was knocked off his motorbike by Thomas William Smith, the driver of a Mercedes Sprinter delivery van performing a right-hand turn on the A628, at the junction of Pontefract Road and Sunningdale Road.

Paul, who was looking forward to marrying his fiancé Shantel Whaling before the crash in April 2009, has been unable to return to work at National Tyres and Autocare in Barnsley and is still too unwell to ride his prized Suzuki.

The 30-year-old’s injuries included a dislocated right thumb, cut fingers and multiple fractures to his right elbow and forearm, his left wrist, both legs and left ankle. He also suffered concussion and a perforated ear drum.

Specialist road traffic accident lawyers at Irwin Mitchell, have now secured a substantial settlement for Paul to help pay for ongoing care, rehabilitation and specialist adaptations to his home. The money will also contribute to the loss of earnings he has experienced while he recovers from his injuries.

Nicola Meese, a road traffic expert at Irwin Mitchell, said: “It’s a huge relief for Paul that we are able to support him in getting his life back on track following the accident three years ago.

“We will always fight for those who have been a victim of an accident and where their lives have been affected as a result. The work we do helps victims and their families to rebuild their lives from serious injury and in many cases funds future care, support and a better quality of life.

“Paul can now begin to put this incident behind him and look forward to returning to work.”

Paul said: “This accident has been life-changing for me and my family. Before the crash I had a full and active lifestyle. In fact, my friends and family said I was just like Tigger because I was always so full of energy and enthusiasm. I enjoyed my job, I liked to socialise with my friends regularly, I loved riding my motorbike and Shantel and I were looking forward to planning our wedding.

“Now I feel like life is on hold as I come to terms with the injuries I sustained. The accident has had a huge impact on not just my physical health but also my confidence. I’m in constant pain and I’m only able to walk or drive short distances. But I’m determined to get back to work and regain the active lifestyle I once had.

“Receiving the settlement is a huge relief as it will allow me to concentrate on getting back to health without worrying about the costs of rehabilitation and being unemployed. I may never fully recover and face more surgery to improve my condition, particularly the pain in my arm, but I hope the funds will now help me get my life back on track.”
