New Scottish Figures Raise Concerns

Drivers in Scotland have been urged by serious injury specialists at Irwin Mitchell to not underestimate the impact that getting behind the wheel while under the influence can have, following the release of concerning new statistics.

New figures released by the police have revealed that reports of drink-driving across the recent Christmas period were around 12 per cent higher than 12 months earlier, while instances of drug-driving were also up by 44 per cent.

Among the cases highlighted was an incident where a woman was stopped while travelling with her six-year-old daughter and another in which a man hid in his loft in an effort to avoid being caught by officers.

Elaine Russell, a Partner at Irwin Mitchell’s Glasgow office who works on such cases, said: “Having seen the devastating impact that dangerous driving under the influence can have on so many lives, these figures are hugely concerning.

“People who drive after drinking alcohol or taking drugs put themselves, other road users and pedestrians at very serious risk and it is positive that the police are taking a strong stance on this awful issue.

“Every possible effort needs to be made to spread awareness of this issue and ensure that road users fully realise the terrible dangers that such activities can have. It is also vital that officers continue with regular testing and continue to crack down on this issue in places where these problems often occur.

“Too many people have already been hurt as a result of drink and drug-driving and it is incredibly important that lessons are learned from the past.”
