Irwin Mitchell Advises On London Jewish Community Centre

£50m Project To Be Completed By 2013

Irwin Mitchell has advised the charity JCC Ventures Ltd on the construction of the Jewish Community Centre for London on a site on the Finchley Road, Hampstead.  When construction is complete in 2013, the new 35,000 sq ft Jewish Community Centre building will become a major centre for London’s Jewish Community.
At the same time Irwin Mitchell has advised on the construction of a nine storey residential tower which will create 14 apartments on the same site. The law firm has been working closely with the client’s main contractor, BAM Construction Ltd.
The new building will be beautiful, functional and state of the art, with a 60-seat cinema, cafes and a bar, multi-purpose hall, dance studios, multi media resource centre, a demonstration kitchen and a full day-care nursery. There will be an external piazza for all types of outside events, such as performances, markets, an ice rink etc. The cost of the Community Centre development - £50 million - is being raised entirely by private funds, individuals, trusts and foundation, most notably the Clore Duffield Foundation. The building is due to be ready in March of next year.

Irwin Mitchell has been advising on the structuring of the freehold and leasehold interests in the whole development project and on its financing aspects.  The Irwin Mitchell team was led by Head of Construction, partner David Parton assisted by Simon Tweedle, finance partner on the funding issues and Lewis Myers, partner on real estate aspects, together with associate Claire Illingworth.

David Parton, Construction Partner at Irwin Mitchell, said: “This is such an exciting project to be involved with. The new centre will be a focal point for the Jewish Community in London, giving a sense of belonging to both young and old, religious and secular, reform and orthodox.  It is also an important development in its own right with its state of the art facilities on such an amazing site. I feel very privileged to have been involved in such a special building over the last few years and look forward to its completion early next year.”
