Healthcare Body Raises Concerns

A medical law expert at Irwin Mitchell has joined calls for hospitals to ensure they are fully prepared for the upcoming four-day weekends in April.

The Society for Acute Medicine has released a survey which raises concerns over the plans that NHS Trusts have put in place to cater for the fact there will be only three normal working days between April 22nd and May 2nd due to both Easter and the Royal Wedding.

According to the body, a failure to address the issue could mean experienced medical staff are not available over the period and the quality of patient care and safety is compromised.

Auriana Griffiths, a clinical negligence claims expert at Irwin Mitchell’s London office, welcomed the Society of Acute Medicine’s efforts to put a spotlight on the issue.

She explained: “While many people will be looking forward to the two four-day weekends at the end of April, it is vital that those in hospitals across the country are still given vital support and treatment over the period.

“The welfare of those admitted or in hospital over the period cannot be neglected, as the consequences of doing so could be massively serious.

“I hope that NHS Trusts take note of this warning and put provisions in place which will ensure that patient safety and care will remain a priority over the two weekends.”
