MP Demands Investigation Into Queen's Hospital Maternity Services

A medical negligence expert at Irwin Mitchell has welcomed an MP’s calls for an inquiry to be undertaken into a hospital maternity ward at a Romford hospital.

Queen’s Hospital has been under the spotlight for care failings for a few months, and now Labour politician Margaret Hodge has called for the “litany” of cases of poor care linked to the site’s maternity services to be acted upon.

She has demanded that a full and impartial investigation is held into standards on the site.

In recent months, the Care Quality Commission issued a warning to Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, the operator of the hospital, and suggested it is not taking the necessary steps to protect the safety of patients.

Medical law specialists at Irwin Mitchell represent a number of clients who have suffered complications in pregnancy and births due to substandard care and errors by NHS staff.

Commenting on the concerns of Queen’s Hospital, Alison Eddy, a Partner at Irwin Mitchell’s London office, said: “The discussion in the House of Commons has rightly put the terrible failings at the Romford site into the spotlight.

“It is vital that every effort is made to discover how and why standards fell to the point where the safety of the patients being treated on site has been undermined, as this information will undoubtedly play a vital role in leading to an improvement in future care.

“A pregnancy should be one of the happiest times that couples and families get to experience and anyone being treated by the NHS deserves to know that their wellbeing is a fundamental priority.

“Sadly we have seen the devastating consequences that failings in care can have and would urge authorities to take every possible step to ensure patients at Queen’s Hospital are protected from any risks in the future.”
