New Figures Raise Concerns

A lawyer who specialises in accident at work claims for Irwin Mitchell has called for employers in West Midlands to improve their outlook on health and safety following the release of new figures.

The Health and Safety Executive has revealed that five people from the area were fatally injured at work during 2009/10, which marks a rise of two from the previous 12 months. In addition, 2,464 serious workplace injuries were also recorded by the organisation over the period analysed.

Stephen Nye, Partner and Work Accident specialist in our Birmingham office commented: "It is concerning that so many deaths at work are still happening in our region, particularly in the areas of manufacturing and construction. Whilst nationally and regionally much has been achieved by the HSE to reduce the number of deaths at work, clearly more can be done.

“We have represented many families who have lost loved ones due to accidents at work, not only in Birmingham and Black Country region, but in the wider Midlands area. It must also be remembered that in addition to fatal incidents, many workers are severely injured in the course of their work.

“Having successfully dealt with many such claims, it is clear that in the vast majority of cases the incident could have been avoided by taking simple steps, such as further training, providing protective equipment or fully considering the risks of the task before it commences.

“Whilst businesses are under pressure in these difficult times, health and safety is not an area where compromises can be made. The economic and social costs of deaths and serious injuries at work are far greater than the cost of taking sensible preventative measures".
