MHRA Issues Warning Over New Concerns

Authorities are investigating after the drug industry watchdog issued a warning over concerns that some packs of Nurofen Plus may contain an anti-psychotic drug, Seroquel XL 50mg.

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued the safety alert after reports emerged that some packs of the over-the-counter pain killer were found to be include packs of the prescription-only drug.

Anyone who has bought Nurofen Plus have been urged to check the batch number details on the packets and look out for licence numbers which begin with 13JJ, 57JJ and 49JJ. Three instances of the problem have been identified in south London so far.

Drug manufacturers are now reviewing how the issue occurred and also whether any kind of sabotage may have happened.

“Anti-psychotic drugs can have particularly serious side-effects including heavy drowsiness and we would urge anyone with concerns that they have taken Seroquel in error to seek medical advice.

“Regulatory agencies and the company involved need to carry out a full investigation into this case and provide assurances that lessons can be learnt which will go some way to avoid these problems from arising again.”
