Government Figures Highlight Improvements
The announcement that the number of people killed due to drink-driving fell last year has been welcomed by a leading injury lawyer.
New figures from the government highlighted that the number of road deaths linked to alcohol dropped below 400 for the first time during 2009. In addition, the overall number of crashes linked to drink-driving fell to 8,050, which was a drop of 6.6 per cent from 2008.
Colin Ettinger of Irwin Mitchell, who has much experience of working on serious injury cases linked to road incidents, said the figures show progress but the aim should be to cut the number of deaths further.
“I have seen first-hand the devastation that drink-driving can have on people, with such incidents often having a life-changing impact on both those involved in crashes and their loved ones.
“While the new research is welcome, it does however demonstrate that authorities still have plenty to do to cut drink-driving.
“Hopefully Sir Peter North’s recent suggestions for the drink-drive limit to be lowered will be taken on board and help in efforts to make the UK’s roads safer.”
