Government Urged To React
A lawyer from Irwin Mitchell has welcomed the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons’ (BAAPS) call for the cosmetic surgery industry to be regulated.
Gary Walker gave his backing to the organisation after outgoing BAAPS president Nigel Mercer and his successor Fazel Fatah revealed it had proposed the creation of a body which would monitor activity in the sector in the same manner as Ofcom or Ofsted.
The Press Association reports that the experts made the comment at the body’s annual scientific meeting, where they added that their discussions with the government on the issue had fallen on “deaf ears”.
Gary Walker, who has experience working on clinical negligence cases, said it was time for the government to take notice.
“I have dealt with a number of cases which have demonstrated the devastating and traumatic impact that negligence and complications in cosmetic surgery and the standard and availability of patients’ aftercare can have,” he explained.
“BAAPS’ call for regulation is a welcome move and I hope that the government reacts positively. It is time to reduce the number of errors in this industry and to place patient safety right at the top of the agenda.”
