Body Criticised For 'Systemic Failings'

A leading medical negligence expert called for lessons to be learnt after Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust was criticised over its standards of care.

The organisation has been ordered to offer payouts to a number of relatives and victims who have suffered as a result of the neglect and “systemic failings” seen at Stafford Hospital.

According to an independent inquiry earlier this year, the number of people who died between 2005 and 2008 was higher than expected, with an “appalling” approach to care cited as a key reason.

In addition, a Care Quality Commission inspection revealed that the trust met only five out of 16 objectives in relation to quality and safety in hospitals.

Commenting on the case, Mandy Luckman of Irwin Mitchell Solicitors said: “It is welcome news that the families of those affected by the poor standards of care in the area are now set to receive payouts.

“While the sums involved may not fully repair any distress caused, they will go some way towards ensuring that lessons are learnt from this terrible case.

“Patient safety must always be a top priority for any NHS trust and I hope this serves to ensure that this is the case across England.”
