HSE Criticises Safety Standards At Cornwall Construction Site

Newquay-based Bluechip Hotels has been fined £5,000 for failing to comply with two Health and Safety Executive (HSE) enforcement notices.

The HSE first visited the firm's Lusty Glaze Road construction site in February 2008, expressing concern over a lack of safety precautions for employees working at height and blocked walkways. The company was ordered to make improvements.

A follow-up visit a month later revealed that no changes had been made, with the HSE then deciding to prosecute.

The firm pleaded guilty to breaches of health and safety regulations at Bodmin Magistrates' Court.

HSE inspector Barry said: "Construction companies must make the safety of their workers a priority, not leave it as an after-thought.

"Simple measures can be taken to ensure the safety of employees on construction sites, such as providing guardrails where necessary and keeping the site clear of hazards such as rubbish."

This case is particularly concerning due to the fact that not only were the company acting in a manner which was unsafe and could lead to a work accident, but even when they were told of the dangers and issued with enforcement notices, they failed to act.

“This total lack of regard for workers health and safety is appalling in this day and age.

“All too often I have to help workers pursue their compensation claim following injuries sustained in an accident at work in circumstances that could and should have been avoided.”
