Government Reveals Latest Initiative

Lawyers at national law firm Irwin Mitchell who have witnessed the devastating impact of drink-driving first-hand have welcomed the government’s latest campaign to raise awareness of the issue in the run-up to Christmas.

The firm’s Serious Injury team, which regularly deals with road or traffic incident claims caused by motorists drinking before getting behind the wheel, has said the new initiative could play a key role in reducing the number of crashes and casualties on Britain’s roads.

Launched this month, the government’s efforts are based around radio, poster and online search advertising, as well as a new scheme launched in partnership with THINK! and soft drinks company Coca-Cola.

Under the terms of the initiative, designated drivers will be able to enjoy free soft drinks in a number of venues across Britain over the festive period.

Commenting on the new campaign, Jane Horton, a serious injury lawyer based in Irwin Mitchell’s Leeds office, said: “Due to the nature of our work in relation to injuries sustained in car crashes, we often see the devastating effects of drink-driving first-hand.

“Incidents on the road can leave physical and emotional scars for many years, while in some of the most tragic cases they can also lead to loss of life.

“Christmas is a time for socialising but it is vital that people don't get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol. We welcome the government’s latest campaign to tackle this serious issue.

“Motorists must embrace this new campaign, and we hope that doing so will go some way to ensuring everyone can look forward to safe and happy journeys across the festive period and beyond.”
