Leeds Lawyers Put Best Foot Forward For Cancer Charity

Run for Yorkshire Cancer Centre

29.05.2009

Legal eagles from Irwin Mitchell's Leeds office are preparing to fast-foot it across the city next month in the Leeds 10k Jane Tomlinson's 'Run For All' Corporate Challenge and are hoping to raise over £1,000 for the Yorkshire Cancer Centre in the process.

The team of 11, aptly named 'IM Running' and made up of a mix of lawyers, paralegals and support staff, has been training for four months in the build up to the big day.

Members range from complete novices to experienced marathon runners and even one person who had a hip operation six weeks ago.

Many of the individuals within the team work on a daily basis with clients who have been diagnosed with terminal cancer after being exposed to asbestos at work and have a great appreciation for the care and support that organisations like the Yorkshire Cancer Centre can provide to cancer sufferers and their families.

Nicola Handley, a legal executive in the Industrial Diseases team at Irwin Mitchell and the team’s organiser said: "We have been running together religiously at lunchtimes along the Leeds to Liverpool canal just behind their offices on Wellington Street. It's been tough especially for those of us who are not natural born runners!

"But it's also been very enjoyable to work to this goal together and great to get fit and healthy for the summer, I think some of us have even shed a few pounds.

"We are really looking forward to running with so many other companies on the day and to presenting the Yorkshire Cancer Centre with our cheque as they are such a fantastic charity and do so much for thousands of cancer patients throughout the region."

Sharon Edwards, fundraising co-ordinator at the Yorkshire Cancer Centre said: "We are delighted that Irwin Mitchell has chosen to support us in their efforts in this year's Leeds 10k. I know we are a charity that is close to the heart of many of their runners and would like to thank them for all their hard work and dedication to our cause."
