Asbestos compensation case
A Nuneaton man, who has been diagnosed with an asbestos related cancer, is appealing for former colleagues who worked alongside him in the aircraft industry, to come forward to help in his legal battle for compensation.
Maxmillian Surman is 70 years old and was diagnosed with mesothelioma in August 2008. He is presently receiving chemotherapy treatment for his condition.
Mr Surman worked in the aircraft industry for over 30 years and is thought to have been exposed to asbestos dust and fibres whilst working as a bench hand or ‘fraser’ when he was employed by Dunlop Rim & Wheel Company between 1961 and 1970 and later with Dunlop Ltd from 1974 to 1994.
During both periods he worked at company's Holbrook Lane site in Coventry. He also worked for Dex Gears Limited between 1972 and 1973, at their site in Longford Road, Coventry where he did similar work and it is also believed he may have been exposed to asbestos whilst there.
Mr Surman recalls: "My job involved me using de-burring equipment to clean out various aircraft components and I believe that it was during this time that I came into contact with asbestos dust and fibres. I also remember the roof of the building in Holbrook Lane being replaced in the 1980s and this may have contained asbestos.
"My wife and I were both devastated when, in August 2008, we received the news that I had been diagnosed with mesothelioma. I used to be a really fit and active person and loved to play golf, but lately I’ve not been able to do anything which involves physical activity.
"Despite this, I’m determined to stay positive. My daughter, Jane and my two grandchildren, 17 year old Emily and 20 year old James have been incredibly supportive. I’m also planning celebrations for my Golden Wedding Anniversary, in June 2010, when my wife, Iris, and I are looking forward to going on a cruise."
Tariq Khan, a workplace illness specialist with Irwin Mitchell solicitors, represents Mr Surman. He said: “Since being diagnosed with mesothelioma, Maxmillian has been selected for a clinical trial at Glenfield Hospital, involving specialised chemotherapy treatment.
"We are anxious to help him settle his legal claim for compensation as quickly as possible and it is vital that people who have information concerning the working practices undertaken at Dunlop Rim & Wheel Company, Dunlop Ltd, as well as Dex Gears which is no longer trading."
