Southern train derailment, Bognor Regis
A commuter train has derailed during its journey out of a West Sussex railway station. No one was injured when the 0530 GMT train to Brighton left the tracks near Bognor Regis. The line is blocked between Bognor Regis and Barnham. The train operating company, Southern, has put on a replacement bus service between Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.
Irwin Mitchell Solicitors currently represents passengers of a similar derailment which occurred in July 2007 on the Central line westbound between Mile End and Bethnal Green stations in east London. Six carriages came off the track but the train remained in an upright position. 700 people were taken off the derailed train. Twenty people were injured, five of whom were taken to hospital suffering from minor injuries, including panic attacks and an ankle injury. Following detailed investigations the Rail Accident Investigation Branch concluded the derailment was caused by a loose "bale of material" inside the tunnel.
