Drivers Bemoan Condition of Roads

A survey of drivers across the UK has revealed that the roads in Yorkshire and Humberside have deteriorated more than in any other part of the country.

An AA poll found that more than two-thirds (68%) of the motoring organisation's members believed roads in the region had got worse over the past 10 years.

Northern Ireland appeared to have the best roads, according to the survey of 17,500 drivers, with only 52% saying surfaces there had got worse in the past 10 years, and as many as 25% believing roads had improved.

Male drivers in particular thought that road conditions were much worse (42%) compared with 34% of females. When asked whether conditions had improved, young drivers were most likely to say yes (20%), but the more experienced drivers, aged between 45 and 64, were far less likely to agree (11%).

"Britain's motorists are paying record levels of taxation and yet receive poor value for money," said AA president Edmund King. "These findings come as a stark reminder that, despite some extra Government funding for road maintenance at the start of the decade, the cash is nowhere near enough for drivers to see real improvement in road condition."
