A major Essex road had to be shut in both directions after two lorries crashed, causing one of them to spill 14 tonnes of asbestos onto the carriageway.

The accident happened on the A127 at Laindon in Essex, police said as they launched an operation to clear the spilled load and the debris from the crash.

Four fire crews attended the scene after the early morning collision. One of the lorries had overturned, spilling its toxic load.

The accident involved two heavy goods lorries between Dunton and Fortune of War junctions on the Southend-bound carriageway, according to the Essex County Fire and Rescue service.

One of the drivers was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
