National Mesothelioma Framework

Mesothelioma - Working in Partnership Summit - 13th March 2007

A National Mesothelioma Framework was announced by Rosie Winterton MP at an Action Mesothelioma Day event on Tuesday 27th February in Gateshead.

The Framework, developed by the Department of Health on advice from members of its Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma Advisory Group and from the British Thoracic Society, includes comments received during consultation with cancer networks, professional groups and patients groups.

A separate event held by the Department of Health in conjunction with the Cancer Services Collaborative, in Leeds on Wednesday 7th March entitled : "Improving Outcomes in Mesothelioma : the National Mesothelioma Framework", set out the Framework in more detail.

Adrian Budgen, partner at Irwin Mitchell, who attended the meeting in Leeds said, "The implementation of the recommendations in this Framework will, I'm sure, improve quality of care and access to treatment for patients suffering from mesothelioma."

On 20 July 2006 John Hutton, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, announced a number of measures to ensure faster compensation for mesothelioma sufferers, as well as his intention to put in place a long term solution to ensure that, wherever possible, sufferers of mesothelioma can receive compensation in life.

This Mesothelioma Summit, held by the Department for Work and Pensions Mesothelioma Summit Office aims to bring together a wide range of people and organisations who are interested in improving claims handling for mesothelioma cases, to discuss options for a long term solution.

The summit is being held on Tuesday 13th March 2007 at the Holiday Inn London Regent's Park. Adrian Budgen, Geraldine Coombs and Caroline Pinfold from Irwin Mitchell will all be attending.
