Doctors' failure to diagnose pneumonia in a disabled patient until just hours before he was rushed to hospital has prompted NHS chiefs to apologise.

Despite contacting his GP surgery eight times in just six weeks and being seen by an on call doctor the night before he was taken to hospital, the 36 year old man who suffers from Downs Syndrome and epilepsy was not diagnosed with the illness.
