Carbon Monoxide poisoning

Almost an entire class of children from a primary school on Tyneside were rushed to hospital yesterday morning suffering from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

25 children and one teacher from Crookhill Primary School in Ryton, near Gateshead were taken to hospital in ambulances and mini-buses after experiencing sickness and dizzy spells.

The school was evacuated immediately after the incident and has been closed for a Health and Safety Executive investigation into what was the cause of the illness.

John Davis from North East Newcastle solicitors Irwin Mitchell said, "If this proves to be carbon monoxide poisoning as is suspected, it is a stark warning to schools and other public premises to carry out rigorous safety checks on all gas and electrical systems at regular intervals.

"Faulty or damaged systems must be replaced immediately if they are not to put people's lives in danger."

The children are being treated for carbon monoxide poisoning at three hospitals; South Tyneside District Hospital, Newcastle General and the Queen Elizabeth in Gateshead.
