Pleural plaques compensation
Sufferers of pleural plaque disease, who were prevented from claiming compensation by a Court of Appeal decision in January 2006, could soon be eligible to claim if the Court of Appeal ruling is overturned.
An appeal to the House of Lords is being pursued by a number of sufferers. They will argue that pleural plaques is a condition which causes natural anxiety and carries with it a risk of developing other asbestos-related conditions (such as mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis) because it is an indicator of previous asbestos exposure.
The appeal is due to be heard between 25 June 2007 and 2 July 2007. If the appeal succeeds, it could see insurance companies and employers paying out compensation for pleural plaques as they had for 20 years before the Court of Appeal changed the law in January.
