Fatal Accident In Scotland

24/02/2010

A digger operator was killed in an industrial accident at a pet food factory, police have said.

The 36-year-old man, from Lithuania, was fatally injured in the incident at Alba Proteins in Colin, Dumfries.

A spokesman for Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary said: "Police attended and discovered the body of a 36-year- old man on site.

"Investigations into the death of the man are currently ongoing. The Procurator Fiscal and the Health and Safety Executive have been notified."

Alba Proteins is part of Leo Group Ltd, a company specialising in the processing of animal by-products.

Elaine Russell of Irwin Mitchell’s Glasgow office commented,
“The circumstance of this tragic fatal accident at work are currently not known.  It is clear however that something went tragically wrong leading to this accident.

"Generally, we are seeing an increase in the numbers of workplace accidents involving migrant workers.  Sometimes, the cause of the accident is the inability of the worker to understand instructions or safety briefings given in English.  In such circumstances, the employer is responsible for ensuring workers fully understand what is required of them and how they are to remain safe.”
