Fatal Accident At Work
08/03/2010
A man has died while working on a building site in Skegness, police said.
Justin Gilman fell from scaffolding and was killed by falling bricks at Warth Lane, where house-building company Chestnut Homes is carrying out work.
The 26-year-old building contractor from Holland Fen is believed to have been wheeling a barrow of bricks along the scaffolding about six to eight feet above the ground.
He fell from the scaffolding and is thought to have died when the bricks crashed down on top of him.
The incident happened last Friday at about 12.30pm.
David Newton, managing director of Chestnut Homes, said: "Our thoughts are with his family and his partner.
"We are assisting the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) with their inquiries."
It was the first such accident to occur on a site operated by the house-building company, he added.
An inquest was opened on Monday and adjourned while a report into the circumstances of Mr Gillman's death is compiled, a police spokesman said.
An HSE spokeswoman said: "We are aware of the incident and are assisting Lincolnshire Police."
David Urpeth from law firm Irwin Mitchell said: “This was a tragic fatal accident at work.
“The circumstances of this work accident will be the subject of a detailed investigation. Therefore, at present, it is not possible to comment on the circumstances of the accident.
“However, something clearly went very wrong.
“The construction industry is the industrial sector where a worker is most likely to lose his life in an accident at work. Falls from height and injuries caused by falling objects remain a major source of serious and fatal injuries.
“Sadly, all too often, I have to help workers pursue their compensation claim following injuries sustained after a work accident.”
