Death After Bowel Cancer Operation

12/07/2010

An inquest into the death of a West Yorkshire man who had been treated for colon cancer will take place at Bradford Coroner's Court on Tuesday 13 July.

Francis Wilson, from Pontefract, had been diagnosed with cancer of the colon.  He was 79 years old.  He underwent keyhole surgery to remove the cancer on 23 August 2007 under the care of Abdul Basheer, Consultant Surgeon at Dewsbury District Hospital.

Mr Wilson went on to need further surgery at Pinderfields General Hospital before being discharged home.  He returned to Dewsbury District Hospital in February 2008 for a further planned operation but suffered post-operative complications and died on 12 March 2008.

Mr Wilson leaves a widow, Mrs Elsie Wilson, and two sons, David and John Wilson.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Heather Kolar, a medical law specialist at law firm Irwin Mitchell, said: "The whole family has been devastated by Francis' death. Hopefully the inquest will give them some answers as to how he died so they can begin to move on with their lives."
