Accident In West London

25/02/2010

A one-year-old boy has died two days after he was hit by a falling lamppost in Chiswick, west London.

An air ambulance took the unidentified child to the Royal London Hospital after the incident at the junction of Heathfield Terrace and Sutton Court Road on Tuesday, but he was pronounced dead at about 5.30am on Thursday.

A 62-year-old woman, who was not related to the boy nor pushing his pram, suffered a back injury from the lamppost and was discharged from Charing Cross Hospital on Wednesday.

The baby was with a carer at the time, who was not injured, according to police.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "A baby boy seriously injured by a falling lamppost in Chiswick has sadly died. He was pronounced dead at hospital at about 5.30am this morning.

"A post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course."

Hounslow Council called the incident "an awful tragedy". A spokeswoman said work was being carried out in the area to improve bus journey times as part of the Turnham Green traffic and transport improvement scheme.

Officers from Hounslow CID and the Specialist Crime Directorate have launched a joint investigation with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Katrina Elsey from law firm Irwin Mitchell said: “This is a tragic accident and our sympathies go out to the family. It is understood that work was being carried out in the area of the incident and that the cause of the collapse is still being investigated.

“I urge companies carrying out work in the public domain to take extra care as I often represent clients who have been injured by falling objects when out and about in public places.”
