Problems with Alteplase in cataract operations

5 patients at Whipps Cross University Hospital, London, have experienced opacification of the implants that were inserted as part of cataract operations undertaken between February 2008 and August 2009.
Research by the hospital found that the problems occurred between five months and seven years of treatment with a specific drug, Alteplase. This drug is often administered after cataract surgery to treat fibrinous membranes after cataract surgery despite not being licensed for intracameral use.
Calcification of IOL’s implanted is an uncommon complication and can result in loss of sight and the possible need to replace the implants. Hospitals across the United Kingdom have been warned of this problem.
