Serious Injury Lawyers Secure Six-Figure Settlement For Man Whose Leg Was Crushed

Serious injury lawyers at Irwin Mitchell secured a six-figure settlement for a man whose right leg was crushed between two vehicles.

Peter, whose name we have anonymised to protect his identity, was getting some items out of a van when a man in a parked vehicle behind the van drove forwards, trapping his legs between the vehicles for several minutes.

He was taken by ambulance to the Accident and Emergency Department at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, a specialist major trauma centre. At hospital, Peter had a number of x-rays and was later diagnosed with a compound fracture of his right shinbone and right fibula. Unfortunately, Peter’s progress was limited initially as he developed deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot).

Peter got in touch with our specialist Serious Injury team. We then contacted a physiotherapist and an occupational therapist, who worked tirelessly to maximise Peter’s recovery.

After an intensive period of rehabilitation, Peter secured a part-time role which he hadn’t thought he’d be capable of. He was also able to return to driving.

At a negotiation meeting, we agreed a six-figure compensation sum was agreed to settle Peter’s case. This will enable him to have further rehabilitation in the future as and when required, as well as giving him financial security.

David Withers, a solicitor in the Serious Injury team, said: “Peter suffered a very serious injury to his right leg. Before the incident, he had been fit, active and independent.

“We instructed a physiotherapist and an occupational therapist to maximise his recovery. Fortunately, this meant that Peter was able to secure a part-time role, live independently again and return to some of the hobbies and interests he had had before the incident.

“By securing the settlement that we did for Peter, this will ensure that he has financial security in the future and that he is able to access specialist rehabilitation.”
