Irwin Mitchell has acted for a man who was sexually abused by a priest when he was about nine years old.
Our client, Peter, suffered abuse including anal rape for a period of three years. As a consequence of the abuse, Peter suffered significant psychological problems in adulthood. Despite this, he managed to have a successful career in theatre as an actor and dancer. He then suffered a breakdown on stage. The priest involved was later convicted and jailed.
Peter gave up his career on the stage and began life afresh as a teacher. The main issue in the case was the extent to which the abuse had caused his breakdown and caused him to change careers. Irwin Mitchell settled the case out of court in the sum of £250,000 plus legal costs.
Tracey Storey, a child abuse solicitor at Irwin Mitchell, represented Peter. She said: “Peter showed great courage in talking about his abusive experiences. He had changed careers because of the abuse, but had made a fresh start. He had helped the authorities to jail the abuser and secured justice in his civil case. Both of these helped him move forward.”
