Irwin Mitchell’s expert child abuse solicitors made a claim against a local authority on behalf of three children, securing settlements for all of them.
The children lived with their birth family who were known to social services since the birth of our eldest client. Concerns mounted throughout their early childhood, with professional bodies and neighbours making various referrals to social services.
The local authority didn’t regard the situation to be high priority and so closed their file on the family, despite concerns over sexual abuse and serious violent behaviour.
It wasn’t until many years later, after one of the children showed up at school with severe bruising, that the children disclosed years of physical and sexual abuse. Their mother and her partner were both convicted and sentenced to lengthy terms in prison.
Luke Daniels, head of our child abuse team in Birmingham, managed to secure a settlement totalling £200,000 for our clients, which has gone towards therapy packages for each of them to help them with the transition into adulthood and beyond.
Luke commented: “All three of our clients had been deeply affected by the harmful experiences they went through during their childhoods. Although it is impossible to turn back the clock, they now have the opportunity to engaged in some reparative therapy and look towards a brighter future.”
