The Glasgow office of Irwin Mitchell has successfully represented a young Scottish woman who sustained significant injury in a road traffic collision.
The incident happened on the Aberdour to Burntisland Road in Fife. The car in which our client was travelling was struck head-on by a Fiat Punto which was travelling on the wrong side of the road.
Our client’s injuries included a fracture to her right femur, compound fractures of her right ulna and radius, fractured right humerus and an open-book pelvic fracture. She required approximately 8 hours of surgery to fix her fractured femur with nails and fix metal plates to her humerus, radius and ulna.
Unfortunately, the initial surgery to her right arm did not achieve the desired result and she has had several further operations, to try and improve matters. She has been left with some permanent disabilities to her right arm and leg.
As a result of her injuries, our client encountered various problems at home including difficulties with showering, using her log burning fire, sleeping and preparing and cooking food.
Irwin Mitchell got the insurance company representing the other driver to fund the installation of a central heating system and a wet floor shower room at our client’s home. We also got them to supply a food processor, microwave oven and a memory foam mattress to assist our client. They also made regular interim payments, to alleviate the client’s financial problems.
At the time of the accident our client was a student studying journalism and on completion of her course, intended pursuing a career as a political journalist. As a result of her injuries she is no longer able to pursue that and has had to consider alternative careers.
Irwin Mitchell secured a six figure sum in compensation for our client to provide for the equipment required and adaptations to her home needed as well as loss of earnings and compensation for the pain and suffering involved.
Elaine Russell, Partner at the Glasgow office said “This client suffered horrific injuries and it was important to ensure that regular payments were made to her to provide for her care and support in the future.
"Road traffic crashes are all too common an occurrence and we hope that cases like these will highlight the need for improved safety on our roads.”
