In June 2006 our client Rachel Nelson attended a protest against the building of an animal testing laboratory in Oxford.
During the course of the protest, she was arrested and kept in custody and charged with 5 separate offences including 2 incitement charges.
After a year she was acquitted at court on all charges.
During the course of criminal proceedings it became clear that police officers were taped discussing the incident and arrests. It transpires that a senior police officer said "let's prosecute the sh*t out of them". Various other unprofessional and derogatory remarks were made by a number of officers.
A civil claim for false imprisonment, assault, breach of human rights and malicious prosecution was pursued against Thames Valley Police.
A month before trial the case was settled for almost £15,000 plus payment of legal costs.
