Case Study – HMRC Dispute Over Stamp Duty

Our client purchased some property and paid the mixed-use rate of Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT). They later received an enquiry from HMRC, who wanted to know why they hadn’t paid the higher residential rate instead.

We successfully argued our client’s case for paying the mixed-use rate with HMRC. As a result, our client missed a potential SDLT bill of over £200,000.

Being prepared for potential HMRC enquiries is vital risk management for any business or individual. By getting us involved early, our client gave themselves the best chances of success and we were able to save them a considerable tax bill.”
