Compensation for Man after Accident at Work Leads to Psychological Injury

Incident at work resulted in psychological injury

A man has received £3000 compensation after an accident at work led to psychological injury.

Mr X was employed as a housekeeping assistant at a hospital.

He was in the process of cleaning one of the clinics when he pricked his finger on what he thought was a plastic cap. However, when Mr X looked closer he discovered it was a discarded needle.

He became worried about the effect of the injury and whether or not he may have caught any infection. Due to this stress, Mr X subsequently developed a major depressive psychological episode which lasted approximately four months.

Mr X’s claim was settled with help from Lynne Parker of Irwin Mitchell’s Accidents at Work Team.

She said, “In a case such as this one it shows how vital it is to have a safe procedure in place for discarding used needles and ensuring staff follow those procedures to the letter.

“Had that happened Mr X’s accident would have easily been avoided.”
