Fall Accident at Work Leads to £4,500 Compensation

Work accident case involving fall

Mrs T was employed at Spear & Jackson International Ltd as a customer service clerk in Sheffield at the time of her accident at work.

She was walking towards the office across the yard and was caused to trip and fall by a manhole cover that was sunken below the level of the surrounding tarmac. She fractured her wrist and suffered bruising.

The company was deemed to have failed to provide a sufficiently safe traffic route, which caused the accident.

Liabilty was denied and court proceedings were commenced in Sheffield County Court.

Under regulations workplaces are to have floors that are free from obstructions, articles or substances that may cause a person to trip, slip or fall. Employers need to ensure that they have systems for inspecting and maintaining and repairing the floor surface in order to prevent such work accidents.
