Compensation for Illness Caused by Stress at Work
Work related stress caused illness
An Irwin Mitchell client has received £65,000 in compensation after suffering from stress at work.
Mr X was employed at a local manufacturing plant as a Shift Team Leader. He had worked in this position for 2 years and was part of a successful team when it was proposed that he should be moved to be team leader on another shift.
Mr X had been suffering from high blood pressure and depressive illness since 1999 due to family circumstances and was receiving medication. The employers Occupational Health Doctor advised against the changing Mr X’s shift, immediately prior to the actual move, due to excessively high blood pressure and anxiety.
Despite this medical advice, Mr X was informed that he would have to move shifts, resulting in him collapsing at work and being taken to hospital. Mr X suffered depression as a direct consequence and was unable to return to work due to mental health problems, depression and work related stress.
A claim was issued against the employer and settled without an admission of liability for £65,000 in compensation.
